Our memorable trip to South

We had a memorable trip down to South during April/May, 2006.

Well, traveling always brings zinc thing in our life.  Every one in the family was excited about the trip

The much awaited day came 26th April, 2006.  We started from Indore (via Bhopal & Chennai) to Kanya Kumari.

Travelling by 3 tier A/c. during summer is a wonderful experience indeed. The one convenience, besides cool atmosphere inside the train, I felt in traveling 3 tier A/C coaches is that hawkers and rag pickers are never allowed to come in.   Moreover, one can take rest without much disturbance whether it is day time or night.  You can sleep peacefully during nights since 3 tier a/c coaches  have attendants.  In fact, we had great fun in the train.

A travel without children, chocolates and (of course) currency may not be cheerful and exciting.

We bought plenty of chocolates, during train journey, for eating after every meals and whenever our children got bored, we gave them.  We also carried some games for keeping them engaged.  Indeed the train journey was cheerful.

We reached Tirunelveli (about 80 km from Kanya Kumari) on 29th April, 2006 to attend my cousins marriage.  We were made to stay in the spacious Mandap.  Attending marriages is indeed a satisfying and enjoyable experience.  Marriage is a function where one gets to meet all the relatives, near and dear ones, sometimes - after a long gap.  All share their experiences and enjoy heartily.

The  next day  cousins marriage was there.  We were so busy from the morning, the day passed so fast.  They say `marriages are made in heaven.  Indeed, it seemed like  the heaven came down to the earth and every one enjoyed it to the maximum.   We enjoyed the whole day in the marriage and also the delicious and traditional Tamil foods offered in the marriage function.

The next day, we visited the famous Kanya Kumari.  Kanya Kumari, southern most tip of the country, is truly outstanding for its sceneric beauties and other important places which include Gandhi Mandap, Kumari Amman Temple, Vivekananda Rock (where Vivekananda used to meditate), 133 ft. Gigantic Saint Thiruvalluvar Statue.  We stayed for a day at spacious and beautiful Vivekananda Ashram (run by Vivekananda Society) situated in the heart of the town.  In the wee hours of morning, we got up and rushed to see the sun rise but unfortunately clouds in the sky did not allow us to have a glimpse of rising sun.     The five minutes boat ride from the main land to first Vivekanand Rock and then to the rock on which Thiruvalluvar statue is situated was fun and really enjoyable.  For shopping lovers, Kanya Kumari has lot to offer from sea products like sea-shells and conches to delicious dry fruits, every thing at affordable rates.

The legendary end of India's land Kanyakumari is surrounded by three seas, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea. Therefore the meeting point is called 'Thriveni Sangamam". This place is famous for outstanding views of the sunshine and sunset. The beach of Kanyakumari is an unique beach having multi colored sand which tourists collect and take it away for showing it to others.

It is a wonderful sight to see when the huge waves of the sea hit itself against the rocks and then weaken, before it gathers itself up for another hit. There is a variety of shells found on this beach.

There are other places too like  Suchindram  situated around 13 kms from Kanyakumari which we could not visit due to shortage of time. The Thanumalayan temple here is a depository of art that treasures belonging of those kingdoms, who once ruled this place. The Courtallam Fall situated almost 137 kms and located at a height of 167 m, is believed to contain therapeutic water and thousands of people-visit-every-day-during-season.

A few lines about his universal fame Thirukural :

Thirukural ( in Tamil) is an important work of Tamil literature by Thiruvalluvar written in a poetic form called Kural or couplets expounding various aspects of life. While most scholars place him during 100-300 AD, there are a few who consider him to have lived during 600 A.D. Thirukural contains 1330 couplets divided into 133 chapters of 10 couplets each. Each couplet consists of seven words, with four words on the first line and three on the second.  It contains universal truths which are applicable even today such as abstinence from alcoholic drinks, keeping away from anothers wife(s), controlling mind etc.

Next day, we visited the famous temple at Thiruchendur to have the blessings of Lord Karthikeya.

THIRUCHENDUR

Thiruchendur 85 km from Kanya Kumari is the place where a temple is situated on the sea shore for Lord Karthikeya (younger brother of  Lord Ganesh) and is an important religious center for South Indians (When Tsunami lashed out the seashore areas  of  South on December 26, 2005 Surprisingly, this place was not at all affected and rather the sea level receeded/went inside.  Every one believed that it was due to the blessings of  Lord Karthikeya). This shore temple on the Bay of Bengal is one of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya (or Karthikeya).

Then, we visited to Pondicherry (via Villupuram by train):

PONDICHERRY

We go to Pondicherry (being renamed as PUDUCHERRY now), which is the  home town  of my wife, ceremoniously for a month, every year, during summer holidays

Pondicherry is a quiet little town on the southern coast and  is the Capital of this Union Territory. It is on the east coast about 162 kms south of Chennai (Madras) located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.

Pondicherry is famous for seashore boulevard, Colonial buildings, some of which traces back to the 18th century, line along a grid of straight clean streets and house the French institutions, private homes and businesses, and the sprawling premises of the famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The visitor is greeted by mellow colours of cream, yellow, pink and grey with flamboyant bougainvillea bursting over gates and compound walls of cool courtyards.

Quiet beaches and peaceful resorts to the north and south balance the town's bustling, yet easy  going life. But Pondy hasn't only its own special attractions to offer. It is a perfect base to explore the rich destinations around it (TamilNadu), even in daily trips: Auroville, the international City of Unity; thei mposing Gingee Fort, the holy temple towns of Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai and Chidambaram, the heritage sculptures and magnificent rock temples of Mamallapuram, and the cool and lush hill stations of Yercaud and Kodaikanal.

Pondicherry has a wide choice of hotels for most visitors: beach resorts for the easy going tourist and families, heritage hotels for those who want to experience something else, high class commercial hotels for the corporate visitor and the neat Ashram Guest Houses for the spiritual seeker. And ambient restaurants serve a rich variety of French, Indian, Asian and continental food, with the latest pizza for an American bite.

For the shoppers, Pondicherry has a lot to offer and is fast becoming a favourite shopping destination of the southern metropolitan cities. Pondicherry is soft on your purse with taxes  low or non-existent. It is known for its traditional doll-making and textiles and silks. But it is also  the birthplace of several world class brands in leather, pottery, aromatics, fashion and handmade paper. These excellent products came to renown solely by their superb quality. A new trend is the proliferation of exquisite decor boutiques and export-quality antique furniture galleries.

CHENNAI

After staying at Pondicherry for a few days, we came to our parents house.

Our trip to Chennai is incomplete, without visiting famous Marina Beach.  We always make it a point to visit an evening to Marina Beach which remains attractive always and crowded.

Marina Beach is among the longest beaches in the world and it comprises of sun, sand and surf. Counted among one of the longest beaches in Asia, it is stretched across a 12-km long area and is-Chennai's-major-tourist-attraction-today.

Adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, Chennai has one of the loveliest beaches in India. A walk along the Marina, whether in the morning or evening, re-energizes one. Walk along the beach bordered with a green lawn will entice you to go on a leisurely stroll. At the intersections of this promenade stand beautiful statues of Tamil scholars, patriots, and noted personalities. The Statue of Labour is a beautiful sculpture depicting the efforts of a team of laborers who are at strenuous, manual work.
Watching the sun set and rise from the beach is a fascinating experience.

In the evenings, the beach turns into a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the beach. One can even shop around the beach, buying shell and glass baubles to kites and fruit juices. The Marina, is also the venue for important state functions, accommodate a good number of visitors. There are also facilities of pony rides at the beach site, which attract the children's-interest-the-most.

There is also an Aquarium, Samadhis of Anna and MGR (ex-chief ministers of Tamil Nadu) and beautiful buildings situated on the opposite side of seashore such as the University of Madras, Senate-House, Chepauk Palace, Presidency College, P.W.D office and Ice House are worth enough to see. At the other end of the beach is the new lighthouse. In between, sentinels on the promenade, are several statues of Tamil scholars and two splendid bits of sculpture- the Victory of Labour and the Mahatma Gandhi.

We enjoyed the trip very much and  we resolved to take rest for a year till next summer vacations.
